Applying to the Graduate Programs

The purpose of the Master of Science degree program in Speech Pathology and the Doctor of Audiology program in Audiology is to provide aspiring professionals with a firm understanding of the normal processes of speech, language, and hearing; the competence to diagnose and treat the full range of communicative disorders in all age groups; and the opportunity to practice in a wide variety of clinical settings, including schools, hospitals, clinics, special treatment centers, and private practice. The Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at West Virginia University is one of only two graduate programs in Speech Pathology and the only graduate program in Audiology in the State of West Virginia.

Application Requirements

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning, and present:

  1. # An overall undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 (A=4.0).
  2. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.
  3. Three letters of recommendation which reflect the applicant’s academic and clinical abilities, potential for success in graduate studies, and personal qualities predictive of professional success as speech language pathologists or audiologists.
  4. Personal statement, i.e., candidate’s statement
  5. A personal interview with members of the SPA Faculty

Admissions

The Graduate Affairs Committee of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology determines which students to admit to the graduate degree programs. The Committee rank orders applicants based on overall undergraduate GPA and GRE scores. Rankings may be adjusted, based on factors identified in professional recommendations. The highest qualified applicants, as determined by rank, are admitted until all available openings in the graduate degree program are filled.

Application Deadline

Applications must be received in the Department by February 15. Since the Office of Admissions and Records must first process applications, applicants should plan to submit their materials at least two weeks before the deadline.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that application materials are complete and on time.
