Pre-Speech Pathology and Audiology

Admission

Normally, students are first admitted to the Pre-SPA program of study and matriculate as such during the freshmen and sophomore years. Pre-SPA students are assigned an advisor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology.

Incoming Freshmen

To qualify for admission, incoming freshmen must present an overall high school GPA of 3.0, or a score greater than 1050 on the SAT or greater than 23 on the ACT.

Transfer Students

Students who transfer into Pre-SPA during the freshmen or sophomore year from either another major at WVU or from another university must present a grade point average of 3.0 for all undergraduate coursework taken prior to the time of transfer.

Requirements

For more details regarding the Pre-SPA program, consult the Pre-SPA Handbook. A copy of the handbook may be obtained by clicking here . Students are considered Pre-SPA until they have met the requirements specified below and have applied and been accepted into the SPA degree program.

1. Completion of at least 58 academic hours. Specific requirements include partial completion if not total completion General Education Curriculum. Specifically, the student must take the following General Education Curriculum (GEC) courses:

  • English 101 – Objective 1
  • English 102 – Objective 1
  • Math 126 or higher – Objective 2
  • Stat 211 or Econ 225 – Objective 2; note that Math 126 or higher is a PR for Stat 211/Econ 225
  • Physical Science – Objective 2
  • Linguistics 101 – Objective 4
  • University 101
  • Psychology 101 – Objective 6

2. Completion of SPA 200 with a minimum grade of B.
3. Completion of SPA 270 with a minimum grade of B.
4. Student should also take SPA 274 if their schedules permit.
5. Completion of SPA 199.
6. Overall GPA of 3.00
